New Music: J Cole – Miss America

The Cole storm is moving quicker than Hurricane Sandy. It’s been over a year since the release of J Cole’s debut album and he’s gearing up for his next project. Cole’s first single off his upcoming sophomore LP, Born Sinner, has premiered and to good reception. Classic Cole-bars over a heavy drum influenced track.

Cole plays two sides of the story on the introspective track, spitting bars that ask questions over good vs. evil like:

Am I about dollars, or about change? Am I about knowledge or about brains?

He also has deemed the track a public service announcement (in lieu of JAY Z’s D.O.A. track?). Read the rest of this entry »

J Cole Readies New Single, Miss America

Grab your blankets because it’s about to be a Cole winter. After releasing the trailer to Born Sinner earlier this week, J Cole announced the first single from the highly-anticipated sophomore LP. Titled, Miss America, I’m expecting the track as well as the album to be more conceptual than his debut, Cole World – The Sideline Story.

The song will be available this coming Tuesday, November 13, via iTunes and the album will drop January 28, 2013, coinciding with Cole’s birthday. Watch the trailer below! Read the rest of this entry »

It’s The Weeknd, So Lets Cheers to That.. Maybe

I finally got my hands on the official debut album by The Weeknd. After leaking into our hearts, depressively might I add, The Weeknd garnered a completely new audience with the release of three mixtapes: House of BalloonsThursday, and Echoes of Silence. With that being said, only fittingly would he name his debut album Trilogy.

However to my dismay, and many others, we had already the entire track list of 30 songs despite 3 new tracks. The Weeknd penned a letter to fans addressing the backlash, stating that,

..he would not disappoint,

(read the full excerpt here). I have to disagree and say that The Weeknd I came to love and adore did not deliver on his debut album. I would normally do a track by track review, but honestly the album doesn’t call for it. Check out my thoughts below.

New Music: Big Boi (feat. A$AP Rocky & Phantogram) – Lines

Big Boi is steady releasing new music regarding his solo upcoming sophomore effort, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. The album is set to hit stores on December 11 and will feature acts such as T.I., B.o.B., Little Dragon, Ludacris and Kelly Rowland who is featured on the lead single Mama Told Me.

Lines is a funky Indie-influenced track that contains now traditional wavy synths and tight snares. The Indie duo, Phantogram, is a favorite of mine after listening to their EP in 2011, Nightlife. Favorite track is Don’t Move. With that being said, not so sure the song actually fits with A$AP Rocky and Big Boi’s single verses. Nice track. But not really nice enough.

Not exactly sure on the direction of this album, but nonetheless I’m sure Big Boi will deliver. Get into the track below!

Aren’t We All Sinners?.. Cole World, No Blanket

I can’t be more ready for the year to be over. Hip-hop is taking leaps and bounds and after a strong closing year with Kendrick Lamar’s debut, 2013 is ready to take on J Cole. If you missed the Ustream viewing session (not gonna lie, I did), then you missed out on the important news. Thank God for cyberspace right? Anyways, J Cole blatantly asks viewers,

Aren’t we all sinners? Aren’t we all saints?

Then responds with Born Sinner and a release date of January 28, 2013, the follow up to his 2011 debut, Cole World – The Sideline Story. Won’t say anymore. Watch the video below.

Rihanna – Unapologetic (Track List)

I’ve already posted my harboring dismay about this album here. However we finally get the release date and official track list of the pop princess’ seventh studio release. Wow. The album is due in less than two weeks and is expected to hit shelves on November 19. The follow up to last year’s Talk That Talk will feature a pretty standard set of 14 songs and 1 bonus track. Actually not even a full year later. Talk That Talk was released on November 21. Beside the point.

Rihanna calls on some old friends and two new ones. The stinger? The Chris Brown-assisted Nobodies Business. As appalled as I am at the blatant grammatical error, I’m sure this will be the ballad everyone will be dying to hear. I am to assume that Numb, the Eminem featured track, will be reminiscent of Love the Way You Lie.

Enough talk. Official track listing below. Read the rest of this entry »

Well guys. It’s the 2nd of November and we are already greeted with bad news. No, not the fact that ladies are asking to partake in ‘No Shave November’. Rapper Big Boi announced yesterday that his sophomore solo album will get a pushback. (Cue group dismay)
